We had to re-design characters in ‘The Wizard of OZ’ for my illustration class. The designs were a collaborative effort with a group of 4 people. We each got to design one character. I designed the ‘Scarecrow’. In the end we collected all of our character designs and had to re-draw them into our own styles. This is my interpretation of the character line up.

So my pal Lou Papa did the above image (shout out: http://loupapaart.tumblr.com/ ). I really like it. I like the style, that kind of Ren and Stimpy gauche painting background retro feel, the colour pallet , love it washed out but with vibrant colours where needed. But I felt like there was something a bit off about it and I feel like I figured out the answer.

You see I have been struggling with this problem for a while and it is one of value. That’s not to say he doesn’t have a full range of value in the image he does, but when you turn the image to black and white and look at the whole thing, I can see some opportunities to turn the whole thing up to 100%.

Lately I have been working on things in just value till I get everything exactly right then colouring away in photoshop after. This lets me focus on the two most important things in image making first (where do I want the viewer to look first and how simply can I get my idea across.). Then moving on from there, texture, colour, detail.

ANYWAY! This was supposed to be a bit of a crit for Lou and I hope it helps. The first two images are 100% Lou, the top one I did nothing to and the second one I just turned Black and white. The third one (I badly and quickly) masked off the foreground trees, the water, the big cloud on the left and the sky in the very background. I did this to establish a bit stronger foreground midground and background value variation.

FOREGROUND: The image isn’t really about that is it? It’s nice to see the detail of the paintstrokes and rocks and stuff, but the image (to me, correct me if I am wrong here Lou.) is about that boat coming in and the village it’s going to. So I just made it darker in value. Not by much mind you but just enough to simplify it into a flat field and make the tops of the trees read darker in value than the trees that are in the midground.

MIDGROUND: This is where the action takes place! I darkened the water so the boat read a bit stronger and lightened the water by the village to draw the eye in. To be honest I think I still could have pushed that balance a bit further. I also darkened the cloud on the left to not make it so distracting. It was just a bit bright. Having the village tucked into a dark area is a great idea Lou, your eye is drawn to areas of high contrast and the little tiny shapes make your eye go right there.

BACKGROUND: Again I darkened things up to do two things. The first was to pop out those great little towers on the mountains, they were getting lost up there on the light sky and to pop out the snow covered mountain tops.

As you can see it’s not HUGE what I did, but that is the thinking behind it. I know the colours I used in the third image are a bit over saturated but that wasn’t the point it was about VALUE here. The third image is the exact same image just with the colour turned on. To get it a bit more like the original I turned down the saturation on the whole thing (The fourth image). With about 20 more minutes work I could mask it off and get closer to the original colour scheme.

That is my thought process for everything I am doing now a days. Take it or leave it.

Oh Lou pro tip here, If I am working in colour I always have a layer on the very top of my layer stack that is filled with all black and is set to Saturation on the layer blending options. If you turn this layer on it will show you everything in value (black and white) and you can see where your values are as you work. Makes things easier for me to work in colour.
